Portuguese authorities have arrested Hugo, a Mexican gardener, following a disturbing act of vandalism and sacrilege at the Igreja de São Mateus, a 17th-century church in the Alentejo region. Hugo was apprehended after allegedly drilling a glory hole in a confessional booth and engaging in lewd behavior that has shocked the local community and Catholic officials.

The incident came to light on July 25, 2025, when a parishioner discovered an unusual modification to the confessional booth during routine maintenance. Police confirmed that a circular hole, approximately only 1.5 centimeters in diameter, had been drilled through the wooden partition separating the priest and penitent compartments. Surveillance footage allegedly captured Hugo entering the church late at night with a power drill, leading to his swift arrest.

Further investigation revealed even more egregious conduct. According to authorities, Hugo is accused of positioning himself in the confessional booth during confession times, pushing his genitals through the hole while parishioners sought absolution. He allegedly claimed to unsuspecting penitents that stroking his meat would provide them with holy water and absolve their sins, a blasphemous act that investigators say was intended to mock the sanctity of the confessional process.

The desecration has provoked intense backlash. Father António Ribeiro, the parish priest, called the act “a heinous violation of our faith and the sacredness of this church.” The Archdiocese of Évora issued a statement condemning the incident, announcing plans to repair the confessional at an estimated cost of €2,000 and to reconsecrate the affected area.

Hugo’s arrest has raised serious concerns about his activities in Portugal, where he has resided for the past few weeks. Authorities are investigating whether this incident is part of a broader pattern of disruptive behavior. Potential charges include vandalism, public indecency, sexual misconduct, and hate crimes related to the desecration of a religious site.
